Surgical Hepatology & Liver transplantation

Conceptualised in 2012 by the then head of department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Prof. Mihir  Ku. Mohapatra, the department became functional in 2023. A MoU was signed between Dept. of Health & F W , Govt of Odisha and AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad . Under the able guidance and leadership of prof. Sudhansu Shekhar Mishra, Superintendent, SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack the first case of Liver transplantation was performed on 03/04/2024  (Recipient – Mr. Manas Kumar Barik and donor Mrs Rashmita Barik, his wife). The patient was discharged home with an uneventful post-operative period.

The department is functioning in the 4th floor of trauma casuality building with dedicated modern modular Operation theatre with laminar air flow and necessary equipments. The Liver Transplant OPD is functioning in room no-16 of Superspeciality OPD on every Thursday. Apart from a full time Nursing Officer the department now has four fulltime faculties ( 2 Seniorsurgeons, 1- Anaesthesiologist and  1- Pathologist) on deployment from different medical colleges of the state. The Transplant Department is functioning in coordination with other speciality/ superspeciality departments of SCBMCH as and when required.

As organ donation/ transplantation is need of the hour, the department will strive to meet the demand with more number of faculties and supportive staffs.
