Departmental Overview :
- Department of Orthopaedics started with a humble beginning in 1961 as a 10 bedded orthopaedics unit in the Department of surgery by Dr Dr R C Mohanty who joined as assistant professor . Professor P Tejeswar Rao joined as the 1st professor in the Department of Orthopaedics in 1971. D Ortho & Postgraduate MS in Orthopaedics started in 1972 with 1 & 2 seats each. Now the department has 14 postgraduate seats. The Department runs with Two Professors, four Associate professors,10 Assistant Professors & 20 Senior Residents. The department regularly conducts Department seminars, Workshops, Regional Academic conferences to keep the postgraduates & Faculty uptodate with the current knowledge explosion. Many guest faculty of national & international repute have visited our department to impart their experience & wisdom to our Postgraduates. Many of the Postgraduates & Faculty have won state , national & International awards to bring glory to the department.Department of Orthopaedics conducts all types of modern surgery including Joint replacement ,spine surgery, arthroscopy ,Advanced Trauma ,Paediatric orthopaedics &Orthopaedic oncology. The Orthopaedic Department caters to the patients of whole of Odisha besides adjoining states of West Bengal & Jharkhand. A total of 1.3-4 lakh patients attend the OPD of the department every year out of which around 7-8000 need hospitalisation. The department conducts more than 3000 elective & around 2000 emergency surgeries every year. The department has conducted more than 500 Joint replacement of Hip, Knee, Shoulder, Elbow & Tumour prosthesis in last few years. Recently the Department has been given the responsibility to provide advanced spine care in the Regional Spinal Injury center which is one of the Four Regional spinal injury centres of the country imparting treatment & rehabilitation of spinal injury patients in this region. The department also takes care of the Orthopaedic Trauma patients in the Level-1 trauma centre of SCB Medical College.
