Departmental Overview :

The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology has been enhancing and strengthening preventive, curative and rehabilitative approach to reduce burden of blindness in the state by skilled surgeries, organization of eye camps, conducting handicap boards and improving academics and training among faculties, residents and paramedical professionals in and around the department.

The center has been a pioneer in its eyecare facilities starting from the time of the department being founded by Lt. Col. P. Papatla on 15th July, 1946. The department was recognized as Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in 2012. The department currently runs several sub-specialty clinics like Vitro-retina, Glaucoma, Cornea & Anterior segment, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Squint & Oculoplasty and Low-Vision-Aids with well trained and skilled faculties.

In house CMEs are regularly conducted to enhance the knowledge and skills of the faculties and students all over Odisha.

Facilities available in the department:

A separate Vitreoretinal OT equipped with constellation machine paired with Zeiss Lumera 700 microscope is present in the department, where all complicated and high level vitreoretinal surgeries are being conducted regularly. This is unique for any state government run hospital.

Almost all types of high end equipments used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes are available in the department. These include but are not limited to  Slit-lamp Biomicroscope, Indirect Ophthalmoscope, Goldmann’s Applanation Tonometer, Non-Contact Tonometer, Fundus Camera, B-Scan & UBM, Nd-Yag & Green Lasers, Low-Vision-Aids, IOL-Master, Autorefractometer (With Keratometer), Gonioscope, Led Vision Charts And Chair Units, Oculoplastic Units, OCT machine and many more for improving management strategies of Cataract, Glaucoma, Cornea, Retina, Refraction, Trauma, Diabetic Retinopathy and all other eye ailments. Also, Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) care at Neonatal Care Units of SCB MC and Sishu Bhawan done by trained in-house Ophthalmologists with state of art RET-CAM, along with use of Indirect Green LASER for ROP treatment.
